World Press Freedom Day Celebrates 30th Anniversary & Pays Tribute to Fallen Journalists

The 30th anniversary special event to commemorate International World Press Freedom Day is being held at the UN headquarters on May 2nd in New York City. Importantly, this event pays tribute to journalists who have lost their lives while working in their profession.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is organizing this special anniversary event with a full day of activities.

Also, WPF celebrations will take place in local, national or regional events around the world.

State of World Press Freedom (WPF) in 2022

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports that 67 journalists and media workers were killed in 2022. Moreover, this represents an almost 50% increase from 2021.

When is WPF Day Observed?

People around the world observe World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd every year.

What is World Press Freedom Day?

WPF Day celebrates press freedom and pays tribute to journalists who lost their lives while working in their profession.

Journalists come from all over, including top media outlets around the world.

On this day, people evaluate press freedom and defend the media from attacks on their independence.

Also, the day serves as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom.

Importantly, May 3rd serves as a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.

Accordingly, this is a day to support the media. The United Nations started this day in 1993.

WPF Canada

WPF Canada monitors press freedom issues on a national and global level.

There is an annual event to celebrate WPF Day and this year the event will be a luncheon held on May 3rd.

Join multi-award-winning journalist Anna Maria Tremonti and Irene Gentle, Torstar Vice President for Inclusion and Strategic Partnerships, on the topic of online hate aimed at journalists.
